- Screening: water is passed through wire mesh to remove floating material
- Settling: water flows into tanks where aluminum sulfate is added to help small particles clump and settle to the bottom of the tanks
- Filtration: the water passes through sand and gravel where particles are removed
- Chlorination: chlorine is added to kill bacteria
