Ch 22: Rehab Flashcards
Contusion
Direct musculotendious trauma
Daily Adjustable Progressive Resistance Exercise (DARPE)
4 sets with reps ranging from 1-10
1st set: 10 reps at 50%
2nd set: 6 reps at 75%
3rd set: max number of reps at 100%
4th set: based off 3rd
Macrotrauma
Specific and sudden episode of overload that causes injury to a tissue
Microtrauma
Overuse injury that occurs from repeated and abnormal stress applied
Sprain
Ligamentous trauma
Sprain degrees
1st degree: partial ligament tear without increase joint instability
2nd degree: Partial ligament tear with increased joint instability
3rd degree: complete ligament tear with full joint instability
Muscle strain
Indirect trauma that tears muscle fibers
Strain degrees
1st degree: partial tear of individual fibers with strong but painful activity
2nd degree: partial tear of fiber with weak and painful activity
3rd degree: complete tear of fiber with very weak and painless activity
Inflammatory response phase characteristics
Pain, swelling, redness
Lasts 2-3 days
Inflammatory response phase treatment goal and exercises
Goal: Prevent disruption of new tissue
Exercises: Passive rest initially followed by exercises that do not affect the joint both directly or indirectly
Fibroblastic Repair Phase characteristics
Catabolism and replacement of nonviable tissues
Scar tissue
Can begin at 2 days and last for up to 2 months
Fibroblastic repair phase treatment goal and exercises
Goal: Prevent muscle atrophy and joint deterioration
Exercises: Submit isometrics, increasing neuromuscular control
Maturation-Remodeling Phase Characteristics
Stronger Type 1 collagen production to improve structure, strength, and function
Fibers properly align
Can last months - years
Maturation-Remodeling phase treatment goal and strategy
Goal: optimize tissue function while transitioning to return to play or activity
Exercises: Must be functional and mimic demands
