Ch. 21 Imagery (E-Res article) Flashcards
What is the key to successful visualization?
To be clear about what you want and then commit to that course of action in your imagery
Is there a need for limitations or constraints in your mind’s eye?
No
How does imagery work?
The neurophysiology of the brain does not distinguish between an image and the experience of the imagined place or situation.
The body does not know the difference between what one is thinking and what is actually happening.
Can imagery be used for healing techniques?
Yes, in fact it may be the oldest healing technique used by humans
There is evidence that visualization can influence?
HR, blood flow, immune response, and total physiology
What is a simple application of imagery in nursing?
The use of alternative language when performing procedures, language that, although still useful, suggests a different sensation than anticipated.
Ex: when giving an injection, say, “You may feel a stick.”
–this language decreases anxiety and shifts the pattern from response to “pain” to response to “a stick”
What are the essential points of effective imagery?
- Discipline
- -willingness to briefly stop what you’re doing and undertake the visualization process - Relaxation
- -imagery is most effective when you’re relaxed and it enables you to focus on becoming clear about what you want to create w/ your imagery - Become clear with your goal or purpose
- Commit to your goal or purpose w/ no reservations and w/ complete faith that it will be attained
- Using all your senses, allow yourself to feel the experience of your goal being attained as though it were happening at the very moment of your visualization
What are the systematic steps you can take to make sure your visualization has the desired results?
- Be clear about your desired outcome
- -is your aim to be warm and comforting? Do you want to obtain specific information from your client or colleague? - Mentally outline the whole interaction from beginning to end
- -when visualizing your preparation, you will anticipate all the equipment you will need and consequently will have it ready - Envision the best and plan for the unexpected
- Rehearse repeatedly when necessary
- Review your live performance and update your visualization
