Ch 21 - Blood Flashcards
What is hematocrit?
Percentage of volume of all formed elements in blood
What makes up the buffy coat in a whole blood centrifugation?
Platelets and leukocytes
what is hemopoiesis/hematopoiesis?
Production of formed elements occurring in red marrow
Define Rouleau
The single file lining up of red blood cells as they pass through small blood vessels
How long do RBC’s live?
120 days
What is anemia?
Below normal oxygen carrying capacity of the blood
What measure indicates anemia?
Low hematocrit
What is pernicious anemia?
body doesn’t make enough RBC’s due to lack of B12
What is hemolytic anemia?
RBC’s are destroyed faster than the bone marrow can produce them
What is polycythemia?
A high number of RBCs
What types of cells are Granulocytes?
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
Basophils
What types of cells are Agranulocytes?
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
Characteristic of Neutrophils
First to appear at an infection, and phagocytize bacteria
Characteriistic of Eosinophils
Protect against infections by parasitice worms, and increase in numbers during allergic reactions
Describe Basophils
Release histamines in damaged tissues causing vasodilation, also release heparin an anticoagulant.
