Ch 19 A - Senses Receptors, Gustation, and Olfaction Flashcards
Define sensation
Conscious awareness of the stimuli
Define general senses
Senses not localized in the head
Define special senses
Senses localized in the head
What are the 5 general modalities of sensory receptors?
Chemoreceptors
Thermoreceptors
Photoreceptors
Mechanoreceptors
Nociceptors
Define phantom pain
Sensations associated with a part of the body that has been removed
Define referred pain
pain perceived as originating from the skin but originates from certain visceral organs.
What are papillae?
Tissue elevations on the tongue containing taste buds
What is the gustatory pathway?
Gustatory cells -> CN 9 and 7 -> insular cortex
What is the olfactory pathway?
Olfactory neurons -> olfactory bulb -> olfactory tract -> temporal lobe
What is the medial canthus
The medial joining of the eyelids
What is the lateral canthus
The lateral joining of the eyelids
What is the lacrimal caruncel?
The pink fleshy region near the medial canthus
What is the conjunctiva?
A lining of the eyelids and anterior sclera.
What is lacrimal fluid?
Tears
What is the lacrimal apparatus?
The structures that produce collect and drain tears
What is the lacrimal pathway?
Lacrimal gland -> lacrimal canaliculi -> Lacrimal sac -> Nasolacrimal duct
What does the lacrimal gland do?
Produces tears
What does the lacramal canaliculi do?
drain excess tears
What does the lacrimal sac do?
Collects drained tears
What does the nasolacrimal duct do?
Drain tears from lacrimal sac to nasal cavity
Where is the anterior cavity of the eye located?
Between the lens and cornea
