Ch 21 Flashcards
Pathogens
Viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other microbes that cause disease
Human body has how many lines of defense?
3
What is first line of defense consists of?
External barriers such as skin and mucous membranes.
The first line of defense is less specific
True
The third line of defense is more specific
True
What does the second line of defense consists of?
Leukocytes, macrophages, antimicrobial proteins, NK cells, inflammation, and fever
What is the third line of defense?
It defeats a pathogen and leaves “memory” to the body.
What effect does the “memory” have?
It enables one to defeat pathogen quickly in future encounters.
What is nonspecific defenses?
It lacks in capacity to remember particular pathogens.
It may react differently to it in the future.
Has broad range of diseases.
This kind of defenses are present from birth.
What is adaptive / specific immunity?
It allows the body to adapt to a given pathogen.
It is specific because the body develops a separate immunity to each different pathogens.
What are the 3 types of nonspecific defenses?
- Protective Proteins
- Protective Cells
- Protective processes
What are examples of Protective Proteins?
Keratin, interferons, and complement
What are examples of Protective Cells?
Neutrophils and macrophages
What are examples of Protective Processes?
Fever and inflammation.
