Ch. 2 Anatomy and Physiology (set 1) Flashcards
purpose of the skin?
three things
protection
sensation
secretion
three layers of the skin?
epidermis
dermis
subcutaneous/hypodermis
integumentary system
skin and its appendages (nails, hair, and sweat and oil glands)
dermis
second layer of skin that is responsible for attaching the skin to the body.
It lends strength and elasticity to the skin.
We have 2 types of glands. What are they?
sweat
sebaceous
What is the epidermis?
OUTERMOST avascular (no blood) protective layer of the skin
What does “subcutaneous” mean? and what is in there?
beneath the skin
fat
hypodermis
layer of subcutaneous fat and connective tissue lying beneath the epidermis
What does the hypodermis do?
acts as a thermal barrier
What is the outermost layer within the epidermis?
stratum corneum
Which layer of the epidermis goes to mitosis?
Stratum Basale
This layer is one of the most important layers of our skin. This is because it contains the only cells of the epidermis that can divide via the process of mitosis
Name the 5 layers in the epidermis:
Corneum
Lucidum
Granulosum
Spinosum
Basale
What is the first layer or base layer of the epidermis?
stratum basale
stratum corneum
Outermost layer of the skin
known for death and sloughing off of aged keratinocyte
stratum lucidum
2nd layer from the top
thin and clear
not present in all areas of the body/skin
