Ch. 18 Adrenergic antagonists Flashcards
Relevant therapeutic applications of Alpha blockade
essential blockade, reversal of toxicity from A1 agonists
Adverse effects of A1 blockade
orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, nasal congestion, inhibition of ejaculation
Adverse effects A2 blockade
potentiation of reflex tachycardia
Prazosin uses
hypertension, can benefit men with BPH
Prazosin adverse effects
orthostatic hypotension, reflex tachycardia, nasal congestion
Therapeutic applications of Beta blockade
angina pectoris, hypertension, cardiac dysrhythmias, MI, reduction of perioperative mortality, HF, hyperthyroidism, migraine prophylaxis, stage fright, glaucoma
Adverse effects of Beta blockade
bradycardia, reduced cardiac output, precipitation of HF, AV heart block, rebound cardiac excitation
Adverse effects of B2 block
bronchoconstriction (do not give to people with asthma), hypoglycemia
Propranolol uses
HTN, angina, cardiac dysrhythmias, MI
Propranolol adverse effects
bradycardia, AV heart block, HF, rebound cardiac excitation, bronchoconstriction, inhibition of glycogenolysis, CNS effects, effects in neonates
Metoprolol uses
HTN is primary use, also can be used for angina, MI, HF
Metoprolol adverse effects
bradycardia, reduced cardiac output, AV block, rebound cardiac excitation
