Structure + Function of Nose
- first segment of respiratory system
- sensory organ for smell
- CN I (olfactory)
- sinues (lined with ciliated mucous membranes)
- maxillary, front, ethmoid, sphenoid
Structure + Function of Mouth
- first segment of digestive system AND airway to respiratory system
- function: taste
Tongue functions:
- mastication - swallowing - teeth cleansing - speech formation
Salivary Gland functions:
- moisten/lubricate food
- start digestion
- clean/protect mucosa
Structure + Function of Throat
Oropharynx and Nasopharynx (above oropharynx and behind nasal cavity)
Developmental Consideration for Nose, Mouth, and Throat
Infant/Children
- salivation starts at 3 months
Pregnant women
- stuffy sinuses and epistaxis from increased vascularity
Aging Adult
- nose may be more prominent (loss of subq fat)
- decrease smell after 60 years
- decrease in salivary secretion (at risk for undernutrition b/c loss of desire to eat since everything starts to taste the same)
Collecting Objective Data: Nose, Mouth, Throat (inspect external nose)
midline position and nasal flaring
Collecting Objective Data: Nose, Mouth, Throat (inspect internal nose)
color/discharge, masses/lesions, swelling of turbinates (made of bone, covered by mucosa/ regulate airflow)
Collecting Objective Data: Nose, Mouth, Throat (inspect sinuses)
palpate frontal and maxillary sinus
percuss for tenderness (seen less often than palpation)
Collecting Objective Data: Nose, Mouth, Throat (inspect mouth)
mucosa and palate pink
lips smooth w/o lesions
pharynx pink
Collecting Objective Data: Nose, Mouth, Throat (inspect throat)
grade tonsils 0-2 (0 = no inflammation) assess position of uvula (should be midline) CN XII (hypoglossal) - for movement of tongue
