1 Rule of Pain Complaints
BELIEVE THE PATIENT
Sources of Pain
Visceral: from internal organs
Somatic: from musculoskeletal tissues
Deep Somatic: from blood vessels, joints, tendons, muscles, bone
Cutaneous: from skin surface and subcutaneous tissues
Referred: from another body location/origin
Types of Pain
Acute: short-term (specific injury/event; pain goes away after healing)
Chronic: long-term (continues for 6+ months; sometimes worsens over time)
Breakthrough: transient (short-lived/temporary); intermittent
How to find out details of pain
OLDCARTS
Pain Rating Scales (three types)
Numeric scale: rate from 0-10
- 0 = no pain; 10 = worst pain of your life
Face scale: patient points to level of pain based on face
Visual analog scale: point to area on scale that is reflective of pain
- left side = no pain; right side = worst pain of life
