Ch 17 Genetics and Complex traits Flashcards
Why are complex traits complex
Difficult to define how the underlying genotype gives rise to a trait like height, weight, eye color, hair color
Why do complex traits result?
from changes to more than one gene
What is quantitative variation usually due to?
Genes and the environment
What is an environmental risk factor
A characteristic in a persons environment that increases the chances of developing a particular disease
trisomy vs triploid
Trisomy is I extra chromosome and triploid is an extra SET of chromosomes
Concordance measure what?
the extent of alikeness in twins
Concordance rate
Homozygous for the trait/ how many have at least one allele for the trait
What does pleiotropic mean?
When a single allele can have multiple effects
ex how the allele in cats gives color and eye type
What is hybrid vigor?
When a cross between two different true breading homozygotes result in larger stronger offspring with both traits
