CH 15 Flashcards
What is consciousness?
state of being aware of sensations/ideas (able to reflect, know what it feels like to experience, report to others)
The Cognitive Unconscious
mental activities that enable our interactions with the world (series of actions not aware of, but aware of their products)
even awareness of own thoughts is subject to unconscious forces
Examples of unconscious reasoning
false fame effect
placebo + electric shocks
introspection
framing effect
What does introspection rely on?
After-the Fact reconstruction (reflecting on why you behaved the way you did)
-may be inaccurate
Subliminal Perception
influenced by visual inputs not consciously perceived
Examples of subliminal perception
N400 brain wave: when you see unexpected things=larger N400 energy
e.g. word association presentation (very->happy->war) had largest energy
Limits of unconscious processing
illusions: set shortcuts in perceiving
action slips: do something differently than intended (due to habit)
Unconscious processes
operate without supervision and automatic, leading to simultaneous operation (via biology- dif areas of brain responsibility & practice)
Metacognitive skills
monitors and controls own mental processes
Mind body problem
mind is entirely dif entity than body, work together
Materialism
mind is product of brain (physical)
