CH 14: Vascular, lymphatic, and integumentary disorders Flashcards
What is a lack of adequate blood flow to a region of the body (PVD)?
Arterial insufficiency
What is the general term used to describe any disorder that interferes with arterial or venous blood flow of the extremities?
Peripheral vascular disease (PVD)
What factors may result in PVD caused by arterial insufficiency?
- Smoking
- Cardiac disease
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Renal disease
- Elevated cholesterol and triglycerides
- Obesity
- Sedentary lifestyle
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-Thickening, hardening, and loss of elasticity of arterial walls
Arteriosclerosis
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-Most common form of arteriosclerosis, associated with damage to the endothelial lining of the vessel and formation of lipid deposits eventually leading to plaque formation
Atherosclerosis
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-A peripheral manifestation of atherosclerosis characterized by intermittent claudication, rest pain, and trophic changes. This is the arterial disease most likely to lead to ulceration. Known risk factors: smoking, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and hyperhomocysteinemia.
Arteriosclerosis obliterans
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-Inflammation leads to arterial occlusion and tissue ischemia, especially in young men that smoke
Thromboangitis obliterans (Buerger’s disease)
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-A vasomotor disease of small arteries and arterioles that is most often characterized by pallor and cyanosis of the fingers. Both hands and feet may be affected; triggered by cold and emotional upset
Raynaud’s disease
What is the disorder that occurs with abnormal arterial blood flow?
-A peripheral sign of a long-standing disease process; associated with arterial insufficiency
Ulceration
