Ch. 13 - Terms (Resistance Training Concepts) Flashcards
Define general adaptation syndrome
how the body responds & adapts to stress
Define alarm reaction
initial reaction to a stressor
Define DOMS (delayed-onset muscle soreness)
pain or discomfort often felt 24-72 hours after intense exercise or unaccustomed physical activity
Define resistance development
body increases its functional capacity to adapt to a stressor
Define exhaustion
prolonged stress or intolerable stress
Define principle of specificity
the body will adapt to specific demands that are placed on it
- aka the specific adaptations to imposed demands (SAID) principle
Define mechanical specificity
weight & movements placed on the body
Define neuromuscular specificity
speed of contraction & exercise selection
Define metabolic specificity
energy demand placed on the body
Define muscular hypertrophy
enlargement of SKM fibers in response to overcoming force f/high volumes of tension
Define strength
produce internal tension to overcome external load
Define power
produce greatest force in the shortest time
Define vertical loading
alternating body parts trained f/set to set, starting f/upper extremity to lower extremity
Define horizontal loading
performing all sets of an exercise or body part before moving on to the next exercises or body part
