Group and team task differences
Goals, shared values
Shared values form the basis of shared goals and vision
Goals are more short-term and tangible
Leading teams – face-to-face, virtual situations
A team that is geographically distributed, oftentimes relatively temporary on nature, and largely dependent on virtual media for communication purposes
Role of Conflict
A moderate amount of conflict can be healthy part of organizational life
A total lack of conflict may be an indicator that individuals of not care about their jobs or the organization, or of not feel comfortable enough with each other to bring up differences
Outcome of conflict
Positive: Consideration of a broader and of ideas, resulting in a better, stronger idea
Surfacing of assumptions that may be inaccurate
Increased participation and creativity
Clarification of individual views that build learning
Negative: Increased stress and anxiety individuals, which decreases productivity and satisfaction
Feelings of being defeated and demeaned, which lowers individuals’ morale and may increase turnover
A climate of mistrust, which hinders the teamwork and cooperation necessary to get work done
Risk Associated with Workplace Violence
Dealing with People: Caring for others either emotionally or physically, such as at a nursing home or rehabilitation center. Nurses have faced a 110% increase in workplace violence in the last 10 years
Interacting with frustrated customers, such as with retail sales or restaurants
Supervising others, such as being a manager or team leader
Denying request others make of you such as with customer service or insure claims
Being in High-Risk Situations: Dealing with valuables or exchanging money such as baking or real settings
Handling weapons, such as law enforcement or security guards
Working with drugs, alcohol, or those under the influence of them, such as bartending or healthcare workers
Working night or weekends, such as gas station attendants or hotel front desk clerks.
