subsidiary area, a functionally specialized segment of a large urban complex, dependent on an urban area
Metropolitan area
refers to a large-scale functional entity, may contain several urbanized areas, discontinuously built up but operating as an integrated economic whole (already established)
The five factors important for the early development of cities
-fertile soil nearby
-presence of water for transportation
-availability of building materials
-defensible situation
-technology for agricultural production and food transport and storage
The common characteristic of cities today
they are nucleated, nonagricultural settlements
basic sectors of the economic base
made up of the activities of people that bring in money from outside the community
nonbasic sectors of the economic base
workers produce goods or services for residents of the city itself
The 3 main functions of cities
-central place functions: providing general goods and services for a surrounding area
-transport functions
-specialized functions not necessarily geared to the local area
Residents of larger and more complex cities tend to segregate themselves into groups on the basis of what 3 characteristics
social status, family status, ethnicity

-some capital cities have been relocated outside the core regions of their countries to
