Ch 1: Note Sheet 2 Flashcards
Major features of the human body
cavities, membranes, organ systems
Body cavity
confined spaces within the body that contain internal organs
-protect, separate, and support organs
-separated by bone, muscle, or ligaments
2 Human body portions
axial and appendicular
Axial
includes the head, neck, and trunk
Cranial Cavity
formed by skull and contains the brain
Spinal Cavity
formed by vertebrae and contains the spinal cord
Thoracic Cavity
superior portion containing lungs, and their air passages, esophagus, heart, and major blood vessels
Mediastinum
space between right and left lungs in the thoracic cavity
Abdominopelvic Cavity
inferior portion
Abdominal Cavity
contains stomach, spleen, kidneys, liver, pancreas, small intestine, etc.
Pelvic Cavity
contains bladder, reproductive organs, rectum, parts of large intestine
Viscera
organs housed in the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavity
Diaphragm
strong muscle that forms the floor of the thoracic cavity - mainly used in respiration
Appendicular
includes the lower and upper limbs (arms and legs)
Serous Membranes
line the walls of the thoracic and abdominal cavities, covering the organs there
Pleural Membranes
surrounds the lungs
Parietal
membrane on wall
Visceral
membrane on organ
Pericardial Membranes
surrounds the heart
Peritoneal Membranes
Membranes of the abdomiopelvic cavity
Integumentary system
skin and structure derived from it (hair, nails, sweat, oil glands)
Skeletal System
all bones of the body, as well as ligaments and cartilage
Muscular System
all muscles of the body (movement)
