Ch 1 Basic Considerations Flashcards
What is therapeutic interaction in a session?
“A highly fluid responsive and fluid exchange between the clinician and clients during therapy”
- conversation among individuals
- Actions of clinician
- Actions of client(s)
- 7% content 93% words
Artistry and showtime embodies what?
We are attempting to elicit a behavior from our client through drama, comedy, mystery.
it takes a solid research base, the skills to teach and a lot of finesse (artistry) in the middle
what we do between research and our skills
________ is the bride between research-based knowledge and practical application in Speech Language Pathology
Artistry: it merges the what and the how of our profession
-the artistic quality, or effect, on workmanship
What is task-analysis?
a behavioral concept whereby skills/tasks are broken into component parts in order to learn the parts separately; then the parts are put back together to demonstrate the target or required tasks
Task analysis can be used with the hierarchy level by _____ and breaking down goals
tracking progress
ex. how you will break down skills (observe, prompt, listen, etc.) and then put it back together so when you go back into session you know all those parts and it will be fluid
What are two broad-based skills for SLPs
Interpersonal and Therapeutic skills
What is interpersonal communication?
Interactions used to engage others. They emerge in various forms during various stages of child development.
What is therapeutic-specific skills?
Fundamental core professional skills. All of these must be learned!
ex. communicating expectations
motivation in therapeutic process
enthusiasm, animation, volume
seating arrangements, proximity, and touch
What is the therapeutic mindset?
The mental disposition or attitude that predetermines the SLPs responses to and interpretations of situations that occur within therapy sessions
-We begin to prepare for a session, not just the plan of treatment.
In a therapeutic mindset we must become aware of what possibilities?
- How will I prompt this?
- what if I get a right answer, what then?
- What if I get a wrong answer, what then?
- What if behavior becomes an issue?
- What if, what if etc.
- It takes experience, practice, and preparation to feel “ready” for anything. (This is why it’s important to know your objectives!)
What is a function of therapeutic mindset?
The awareness of the options and the preparedness to select and implement the appropriate option for the situation
How can you develop a therapeutic mindset?
Anticipation, Evaluation, Interaction
Explain anticipation in the therapeutic mindset
Consider, predict, or anticipate what might happen based on dx, past behavior, physical limitations etc. For them best possible to worst (prepare)
“Okay I am here I am ready” –and adjust it for your client depending on their mood
Explain evaluation in the therapeutic mindset
be ready to constantly assess what is happening during the session. Am I getting what I want? Is this headed in the right direction? OR am I going to gall of a cliff here? Did I just get back on track? why are they or aren’t they getting it?
-dynamic assessment— constant evaluation
Explain interaction in the therapeutic mindset
Ready-to-respond mode.
These occur everywhere! How was your weekend, you got a new iphone… tell me about it!
“Now, I’m going to facilitate the session based on what I’ve been given”
