Cervical Ectropion
Columnar epithelium of the endocervix has extended out to the ectocervix
Speculum examination findings for a cervical ectropion
Transformation zone becomes visible
- well-demarcated border between the redder, velvety columnar epithelium extending from the os (opening), and the pale pink squamous epithelium of the endocervix
Presentation of cervical ectropion
Postcoital bleeding
Increased vaginal discharge
Dyspareunia
Risk factors for cervical ectropion
Higher oestrogen levels:
- Younger women
- COCP
- Pregnancy
Transformation Zone of the cervix
Border between the columnar epithelium of the endocervix and the stratified squamous epithelium of the ectocervix
Investigations for post coital bleeding
Speculum exam
Swab for STI if indicated
Management of cervical ectropion
Asymptomatic - no treatment
Problematic bleeding - cauterisation of the ectropion using silver nitrate or cold coagulation during colposcopy
