Purpose of CVIs
aka Animal Health Certificates
to deem an animal safe to travel (internationally, interstate; shows, sales, etc.)
Domestic and International CVIs = documents of the United States
Domestic CVI: Global Vet Link, etc.
International CVI: USDA Form 7001
The requirements of a CVI’s content are determined by what AND are delivered to whom?
- determined by the destination
- delivered to the destination’s state vet / receiving country
Who are the only individuals legally authorized to issue CVIs?
Accredited veterinarians of the appropriate category
Category 1 versus Category 2 CVI authorization
Category 1 = companion animals only
Category 2 = ALL species of animals
Where to find requirements for a domestic CVI?
The individual’s state’s Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website // contact the State Veterinarian
What documentation do all state veterinarians accept for CVI submission? What do only some accept?
- ALL: Hardcopy CVI paperwork from Global Vet Link
- Some: Electronic CVI paperwork (e.g., USDA’s APHIS VS Process Streamlining for livestock animals)
Who must endorse International CVIs? Why?
ENDORSED by accredited, trained USDA-APHIS veterinarians who make sure that all requirements are completted PRIOR to ARRIVAL!!
- Verifies the animal meets the importing country’s requirements as far as can be determined;
- Verifies any required inspections/exams, vaccines, treatments, laboratory tests, and certifications were completed by a veterinarian authorized to do the work; - Verifies that the IHC is complete and accurate as far as can be determined.

Consequences of incorrectly submitted CVI
- animal may be prohibited from entering the destination
- veterinarian may lose accredidation
