Cerebellum Flashcards

1
Q

Cerebellum

A
  • dorsal to BS –> lobes of folded cortex
  • attached to pons via cerebellar peduncles
    Function:
    1) Coordinates complex mov’ts
    2) monitors mm to ensure fluid mov’t
    3) receives sensory input from body/CNS
    4) influences motor function thru thalamus and motor cortex
    OUTPUT = Purkinje cells
    Blood supply:
    1) Most = Basilar (anterior inferior, superior cerebellar aa)
    2) Inferior = posterior inferior cerebellar a

Q

Anterior and Posterior Lobes

A

Anterior:
Location = superior to posterior lobe
Function = mediate unconscious proprioception
Posterior:
Location = caudal to primary fissure, larger
Function = fine motor coordination

Q

Superior Peduncle

A

Location = attaches cerebellum to midbrain
Function:
1) efferent fibers (axons) that send feedback to motor cortex in frontal lobe
2) afferent fibers take proprioceptive info from lower body to cerebellum

Q

Middle Peduncle

A
Location = largest peduncle, links cerebellum with the pons
Function = sends copy of info for m mov't for lower motor neurons to brain

Vermis

A
  • midline of cerebellum
  • divides paravermal and lateral hemispheres
    Function = body posture and locomotion

Q

Horizontal Fissure

A
  • extends around dorsolateral border of each hemisphere from middle cerebellar peduncle
  • divides cerebellum into upper and lower portions
  • largest and deepest fissure in cerebellum

Q

Primary fissure

A
  • deepest fissure in vermis
  • curves ventrolaterally in superior surface of cerebellum to meet horizontal fissure
  • divides cerebellum into anterior and posterior lobes
