Central Nervous System Flashcards
What does the central nervous system consist of?
- the brain
- spinal cord
- nerves
What are receptors?
Specialist cells found in sense organs that detect changes in the environment - stimuli
What are electrical impulses?
Are impulses or messages that are sent along the nerves in one direction to the spinal cord or brain.
What are effectors?
- Muscles that result in movement
- Glands that secrete hormones
What are nerves?
Made up of cells or neurones.
- sensory neurones
- motor neurones
- relay neurones
What do sensory neurones do?
Receive messages from recptors and send them to the central nervous system.
What do motor neurones do?
Send messages from the central nervous system to effectors telling them what to do.
What do relay neurones do?
Connect sensory and motor neurones with the central nervous system.
Lable all parts of the diagram.
- pain receptor
- nerve - impulses
- sensory neurone
- relay neurone
- spinal cord
- motor neurone
- nerve - impulses
- muscle movement
What is a voluntary action?
actions that we consciously control and do
What is a reflex action?
rapid, involuntary action
