Cementum Flashcards
What does cementum do?
- Covers root dentine
- crown dentine covered by enamel
- Provides attachment for some periodontal fibres (min function)
Why does cementum have a very similar structure to bone?
- Collagen matrix
- Lamellar arrangement (layers of tissue)
What is cementum laid down by?
Cementocytes
What are the 2 types of cementum?
- Cellular
- Acellular
What are the characteristics of acellular cementum?
- No cells within
- Usually adjacent to dentine
- First formed (primary cementum)
Which type of cementum is primary cementum?
Acellular cementum
What are the characteristics of cellular cementum?
- Contains cementocytes
- Later formed (secondary cementum)
- Present in apical part of root and in furcation regions
Which type of cementum is secondary cementum?
Cellular cementum
What is a furcation region?
Where the roots divide (region in between the roots)
What are Sharpey’s fibres and what do they do?
Periodontal fibres - attaches tooth to soft tissue
What is acellular extrinsic fibre cementum?
- Collagen fibres from PDL (Sharpey’s fibres)
- Equivalent to primary acellular cementum
- Present on cervical 2/3 of roots
What is cellular intrinsic fibre cementum?
- No Sharpey’s fibres
- Intrinsic collagen fibres parallel to surface
- Equivalent to secondary cellular cementum
- No role in tooth attachment
- May represent a transitional form
