explain the celtic society
there were many tuath (kingdoms) and each kingdom was ruled by a rí (king). then under the kings there were nobles and warriors (aos dána) and then farmers. At the bottom of the society there were laborers and slaves
the aos dána were people with special skills. name some
judges druids (pagan priest) filí (poet) doctors musicians craftspeople e.g. metal workers, masons
name the two types of celtic housing
crannógs and ring forts (raths)
explain what a crannóg is
a man made island in a lake with a platform. can only be reached by bridge or boat
explain what a ring fort is
circular enclosure surrounded by a ditch, earth bank and wooden fence. some also had an underground passage called a souterrain which was used to store food and as an escape route
how were houses on the inside
wattle and daub with thatched roofs
what was the celts unique style of art called
La Tène style
what kind of patterns did celtic art feature
spirals, florals, fantasy animals and curved lines
how were celts buried
they were cremated or buried in pits or coat graves with grave goods. The celts often marked graves with ogham stones.
