Cellular Control Flashcards
What is apoptosis?
Programmed cell death
What are the homeotic genes?
Involved in controlling anatomical development according to body plan
What do homeotic genes contain?
Homeobox sequences
What are homeobox sequences?
Sequence of 180 base pairs (excluding introns) found within homeotic genes
Where are homeobox genes found?
In plants, animals and fungi
Where are hox genes found?
Only animals
How do the hox genes control body plan?
They regulate the development of embroils along the anterior to posterior axis
Steps of apoptosis?
Enzymes break down cytoskeleton The cytoplasm becomes dense The cell surface membrane changes and blebs form
Chromatin condenses, the nuclear envelope breaks and DNA breaks into fragments Cell breaks into vesicles and are ingested by phagocytosis
What does a lack of apoptosis result in?
Tumours
What is the homeodomain sequence?
A 60- amino acid sequence
