Celluar Injury Flashcards
Definition of Celluar Injury
inability to maintain homeostasis as a result of stimuli
Is cell injury reversible?
generally, unless physiological adaption and/or external interventions are unsuccesful
Most common mechanisms of Cell injury?
Hypoxic- lack of O2
chemicals
infectious
Less common mechanisms of cell injury?
free radical, immunologic, genetic, nutritional imbalances
What does hypoxia of cell result in?
Ischemia: lack of blood flow to area
anemia: low red blood cell count
impaired respiratory pump: COPD
impaired cardiac pump
Consequences of hypoxia
anaerobic metabolism
- insufficient ATP production
- accumulation of ions and extracellular fluid
- cell swelling and compromise of function
Chemical injury due to chemicals
Damage to cellular membrane as a result of injurious bonds formed by free radicals and proteins, lipids, carbs
Injurious chemical agents
heavy metals, carbon monoxide, ethanol, street drugs
Systemic manifestations of cell injury
fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, leukocytosis, pain
Cellular Death (infarction)
Necrosis- irreversible injury
Types of cell death
coagulative, liquefactive, gaseous, gangrenous
Disablement model
- pathology
- pathophysiology
- impairment (ROM, Strength)
- functional limitation
- disability
Etiology
study of cause of disease or illness
idiopathic
diseases with identifiable cause
iatrogenic
disease or injury as a result of medical intervention
