Cells of the nervous system Flashcards
Compare and contrast multipolar, bipolar, and unipolar neurons
They all have differences in length of axon and soma and theyre based on connections
Multipolar have many dendrites and always on a axon
Bipolar is 2 processes off of soma
Unipolar is 1 process off of soma
Identify the parts of a synapse
Presynapse Synapse Cleft Gap Postsynapse
Describe techniques used to visualized neurons
The electron microscope uses electrostatic and electromagnetic “lenses” to control the electron beam and focus it to form an image.
Briefly describe 6 kinds of glial cells and their functions in the nervous system
Microglia Satellite Ependymal Astrocytes Schwann Oligodendrocytes
What is microglia?
responds to injury or disease
What is satellite?
surround cell bodies of neurons in the peripheral nervous system
What is ependymal?
help make cerebrospinal fluid
What is astrocytes?
remove waste, provide nutrients to neurons, blood brain barrier
Describe the structure and the function of the blood brain barrier, and the incomplete regions of the BBB
Function of the blood brain barrier is to keep viruses and bacteria out.
Incomplete regions are so psychiatric drugs can reach, glucose, and water.
Describe the structure of the cell membrane.
A phospholipid bilayer with signaling proteins and channel proteins embedded in it.
Compare motor neurons & sensory neurons
BOTH are peripheral, somatic and receive impulses through receptors
What are motor neurons?
end in muscles, glands or neurons in PNS ganglia
MULTIPOLAR
What are sensory neurons?
directly sensitive or connected to receptor cells UNIPOLAR
