Cells and Tissues characteristics Flashcards
What is protoplasm?
The intracellular fluid
What is protoplasm made of?
Water
Proteins
Lipids
Carbs
Electrolytes
What are the 2 distinct regions of protoplasm in the cell?
Karyoplasm/ Nucleoplasm (in the nucleus)
Cytoplasm (outside the nuclues)
What is the fluid of the cytoplasm?
Cytosol
What does mRNA do?
Travel to ribosomes in cytoplasm in order to make new proteins
Ribsomal RNA (rRNA) does what?
Component of ribosomes which is the site of protein production
tRNA does what?
Transfers amino acids to form ribosomes so mRNA can be turned into a sequence of amino acids
What does rough ER do?
Has ribosomes attached and is involved in protein synthesis
Also makes digestive enzymes found in lysosomes
What does smooth ER do?
No ribosomes attached
Synthesis of lipids like steroid hormones
What does golgi apparatus do?
Packages and modifies the things sent by the ER
What do microtubules do?
Maintain cell formation
