Cells And Energy Flashcards
Chemical energy
Carried by ATP in carbon based molecules, not directly from food, useable after a series of chemical reactions
ATP (adenine triphosphate)
Molecule that transfers energy from their broken down molecules to the cell
What does ATP contain?
Adenine (nitrogen base)
Ribose (5 carbon sugar)
Phosphate group (3)
What is used to breakdown glucose?
Enzymes
Molecules energies
Carb 4
Lipid 9
Protein 4
ADP (adenosine diphosphate)
A lower energy molecule that can be converted into ATP by adding a phosphate group
Photosynthesis
Produces sugars that store chemical energy by capturing sunlight to make sugars
Producers
Make their own source of chemical energy
Chrophyll
A molecule that absorbs sunlight found in chloroplasts, made of the thylakoids or grana and stroma
Light dependent
First step where energy from sunlight is captured in the thylakoids using water and releasing oxygen
Light independent
Second step in which sugar is made in the stroma using carbon dioxide in chemical reactions
Photosynthesis equation
6CO2+6H2O=C6H12O6+6O2
Fermentation
An aerobic process that allows the production of a small amount of ATP without oxygen and glycolysis to continue when oxygen is unavailable (doesn’t produce ATP)
Anaerobic
Oxygen is needed
Aerobic
No oxygen needed
