Cells Flashcards
What is a eukaryotic cell, and what would be an example?
A multicellular organism that contains a nucleus, e.g. Animal cell
What is a prokaryotic cell, and was is an example?
A unicellular organism that does not contain a nucleus, e.g. Bacterial cell
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm (eukaryotic)?
Site of chemical reactions. It’s a gel like substance containing enzymes to catalyse reactions.
What is the purpose of the nucleus? Is it prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic. Contains genetic material and controls the activities of the cell.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane (eukaryotic)?
Semi-permeable. Controls the movement of substance in and out of the cell.
What is the purpose of the cell membrane (prokaryotic?)
Site of chemical reactions; gel like substance containing enzymes to catalyse reactions.
What is the purpose of a ribosome?
Site of proteinsynthesis.
What is the purpose of mitochondiron?
Site of respiration where energy is released for the cell to function.
What is the purpose of the plasmid and is it prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Prokaryotic. Small rings of DNA, contain additional genes.
What is the purpose of the cytoplasm (prokaryotic)?
Semi-permeable. Controls the movement of substances in and out the cell.
