Cell Structure Flashcards
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like material inside the cell, filling all the space between the nucleus and the cell membrane.
Cytosol
The liquid medium of the system of cytoplasm.
Nucleus
It is the place of DNA replication and transcription of mRNA
Ribosomes
This is where amino acids are joined together to create proteins. They’ll either be floating freely in the cytoplasm or attach to various organelles.
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
Provides a surface for chemical reactions, while the channels are used for storing or transporting molecules.
Rough ER
Has ribosomes attached on the outside surface, transports proteins, produces protein.
Smooth ER
Has no ribosomes attached on the outside surface, transports proteins, doesn’t produce protein.
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies proteins and packages them for secretion out of the cell in vesicles.
Lysosomes
Contains digestive enzymes with the ability to break down large molecules and remove waste.
Mitochondria
Chemical reactions with on the cristae, creating energy for the cell.
Centrioles
Involved in the reproduction of the cell by separating chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis
Cilia
Hairlike projections that extend from the plasma membrane and are used for locomotion.
Flagella
Whiplike tails found in one-celled organisms to aid in movement
Cytoskeleton
It is a framework of protein that gives the cell its shape and assists the cell in movement.
