Cell Organelles Flashcards
What is a Cell Organelle?
A structure found inside a cell that has one or more specific jobs to perform in the cell, much like your organs do in your body.
What does the word “Organelle” mean?
The word “Organelle” means “little organ”. Most organelles are “membrane bound”, meaning they are bound by by a biological membrane.
What are examples of “membrane bound” organelles?
Nucleus, Mitochondria, Chloroplast, Lysosome, etc.
What organelles are not membrane bound?
Ribosomes, Cell Wall, Cytoskeleton, etc.
Eukaryotic cells-
Have membrane bound organelles but prokaryotic cells do not
What organelle is responsible for storing and protecting the genetic material and controls all cellular activity within the cell?
The Nucleus
What organelle maintains homeostasis by allowing the passage of certain particles/molecules in and out?
The cell membrane aka plasma membrane
What organelle provides structure and support and acts as the first line of defense to outside factors trying to invade plant cells?
The cell wall
What organelle provides, stores, and releases energy in the form of ATP to the cell?
The mitochondria
What organelle converta light energy into chemical energy during the process of photosynthesis?
The chloroplasts
What organelle stores food, water, and waste; plants have 1 large central and animals have many smaller?
The vacuole
