Q

Fluid mosaic model

A

the fluid mosaic model describes the arrangement of molecules in the membrane.
- in this model, phospholipids forms a double continuous layer called the bilayer which is fluid since its constantly moving.

Q

proteins in fluid mosaic model

A

protein is scattered in the fluid mosaic model like the tiles, which contains channel proteins and carrier proteins that allows the movement of ions and large molecules through the membrane.
- also the cell surface membrane consists of the receptor proteins that allows the cell to detect chemicals released from other cells.

Q

phospholipids

A

phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail so the center of the phospholipid bilayer is hydrophobic, so it doesnt allow water soluble substances to pass through it.

Q

cholestrol - gives membrane stability

A
  • cholesterol is a type of lipid present in almost all cell except bacterial cell.
  • cholesterol molecules binds to the hydrophobic tail causing them to pack more closely together which makes the membrane more rigid .
  • cholestrol helps to maintain shape of animal cells
