CELL MEMBRANE STRUCTURE Flashcards
Fluid mosaic model
the fluid mosaic model describes the arrangement of molecules in the membrane.
- in this model, phospholipids forms a double continuous layer called the bilayer which is fluid since its constantly moving.
proteins in fluid mosaic model
protein is scattered in the fluid mosaic model like the tiles, which contains channel proteins and carrier proteins that allows the movement of ions and large molecules through the membrane.
- also the cell surface membrane consists of the receptor proteins that allows the cell to detect chemicals released from other cells.
glycoproteins and glycolipids
protein with a polysaccharide chain attatched
- lipoid with a polysaccharide chain attatched.
phospholipids
phospholipids have a hydrophilic head and a hydrophobic tail so the center of the phospholipid bilayer is hydrophobic, so it doesnt allow water soluble substances to pass through it.
cholestrol - gives membrane stability
- cholesterol is a type of lipid present in almost all cell except bacterial cell.
- cholesterol molecules binds to the hydrophobic tail causing them to pack more closely together which makes the membrane more rigid .
- cholestrol helps to maintain shape of animal cells
