cell membrane Flashcards
what kind of transport takes place in the cell membrane?
passive and active
passive transport def
no energy, naturally occuring
what two modes of diffusion does passive transport have?
simple and facilitated
simple diffusion def
small non-polar molecules (non-charged)
simple diffusion includes:
osmosis, tonicity and osmolarity
osmosis
water/solvent ONLY
tonicity and osmolarity
hypertonic, isotonic, hypotonic
what affects diffusion rates?
concentration gradient, mass of molecules, temp, solvent density, solubility, surface area, distance traveled, pressure
how does concentration gradient affect diffusion
the bigger, the faster the diffusion
how does mass of molecules affect diffusion
smaller and lighter = more faster diffusion
how does temp affect diffusion
higher temp= higher motion of molecules=faster diffusion
how does solvent density affect density
more dense, the slower the diffusion.
how does solubility affect diffusion
noncharged & non-polar = faster diffusion
how does distance traveled affect diffusion
shorter the distance = the faster the diffusion
how does pressure affect diffusion
pressure of blood moving can facilitate diffusing. Pushes things and speeds up diffusion.
