Lipids Flashcards
lipid
a molecule that does not dissolve in water
are polar hydrocarbons philic or phobic
hydrophilic
are non-polar hydrocarbons philic or phobic
hydrophobic
what are triglycerides made of
glycerol and 3 fatty acid tails
what are the 3 fatty acids made of
hydrocarbon chains with a carboxyl group at the end
saturated fatty acid
single bond
unsaturated fatty acid
1 or more double bonds
essential fatty acids
essential, the animal must consume them, cannot synthesize it themself
examples of lipids
waxes in plants and aquatic animals
phospholipids (talk abt the parts and if they’re polar/nonpolar and if they’re philic/phobic)
top of head - phosphate, hydrophilic, polar
end of head - glycerol, hydrophilic, polar
one tail - sat. FA, hydrophobic, nonpolar
other tail, unsat FA, hydrophobic, nonpolar
amphipathic def and tell me what has this quality
has both hydrophilic and hydrophobic behaviors, example is phospholipids
steroid
a lipid containing a specific “four-fused-rings” structure. (aromatic)
fat
a lipid comprised of three fatty acids - these are hydrocarbons with a COOH group on one end - attached to a glycerol (a 3-carbon compound)
