Cell Junctions Flashcards
Cell Junction
is a type of structure that exists within the tissue of some multicellular organisms. A multiprotein complexes that provide contact between neighboring cells or between a cell and the extracellular matrix
Types of junctions
1) anchoring junctions
2) tight junctions
3) gap junctions
4) plasmodesmata
tight junction
completely encircles each cell, producing a seal that prevents the passage of materials between cells. In order to pass, must enter by diffusion or active transport
Ex: cells in digestive tract
Gap junction
narrow tunnels between cells.Prevent cytoplasm of each cell from mixing but allow for the transport of ions and small molecules. (Basically are two channel proteins closely aligned)
Ex: heart tissue to pass electric impulses
Plasmodesmata
narrow tunnel/tube of ER desmotubule between PLANT cells.
