Biomes Flashcards
tropical rain forest
stable high temperatures and humidity, heavy rainfall, tall trees with branches at top so little light hits floor, most diverse biome
Savanna
grassland with scattered trees, high temp, little rain
Temperate grasslands
receive less rain and has lower temp than savanna (and uneven seasonal occurrence of rain)
Temperate deciduous forests
warm summer, cold winters, moderate rain, deciduous trees shed leaves in winter causing for rich soil, mammals hibernate, has Vertical Stratification
Temperate coniferous
cold dry forests, evolved to conserve water (needle leaves that do not shed)
Desert
hot and dry, most extreme temp fluctuations being hot during the day and cold at night, growth of plants is limited to short periods after rain, large adaptations to conserve water
Taigas
conferous forests (trees with needle leaves), very cold long winters and percipitation in the form of snow
Tundra
cold winters, top layer of soil thaws during summer but permafrost bottom layer always frozen, little rain, support minimal grass vegetation
Chaparral
terrestrial biome along California coastline characterized by wet winters, dry summers, scattered vegetation
Polar region
frozen with no vegetation or terrastrail animals
Fresh water biomes
ponds, lakes, streams, and rivers. (Hypotonic to organisms affected by climate/weather variations)
Two major divisions of marine biome?
+Benthic zone- lowest layer of body of water where light doesn’t penetrate including sediment and sub-surface layers.
+Pelagic zone- water is neither close to shore nor the very bottom
5 layers of Pelagic zone of Marine biomes? Just try to remember first letters top to bottom, all names end with “pelagic”
Epipelagic- ONLY photic layer, surface layer, most ocean life
Mesopelagic- minimal oxygen
Bathypelagic- pitch black
Abyssalpelagic-cold, no eyes bc no light
Hadalpelagic- life exists in hydrothermal vents
Vertical Stratification
Ex: Temperate Decidous forests. Plants and animals live on ground, low branches/treetops, hibernation
Permafrost
The deep layer of soil in the Tundra that is permanently frozen
