Cell Division Flashcards
Multicellular organisms
In multicellular organisms, cell division (called mitosis) is needed for growth and replacing old cells and repairing tissues
Unicellular organisms
In unicellular organisms, this sort of cell division is needed for asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction
Asexual reproduction is when all the genes come from one parent and only from them, this means the child or baby will be an exact replica of the mother, also known as cloning, bacteria, fungi and tiny bugs reproduce asexually and so do our cells as they need to be able to replace exactly what the previous cell was doing.
Sexual reproduction
Sexual reproduction is when the genes of the baby come from two different sides, male and female, although this is more risky as it is mixing genes from 2 different places rather than one, it introduces variety. The two sex cells that fuse together (gametes) form a zygote which then makes the individual, this process is called meiosis.
