Cell Division 1 Flashcards
What is a gamete?
Sex cells (sperm, ova, pollen)
What’s a haploid?
Haploid cells contain only one set of Chromosomes
What is a diploid?
Diploid, as the name indicates, contains two sets of chromosomes
What is a gene?
A section of a chromosome made from DNA that carries the code to make a protein
What is an allele?
Two versions of the same gene
What is the first step of mitosis?
Chromosomes make copies it themselves and nucleus disappears
What is the second stage of mitosis?
Copied chromosomes line up
What is the third stage of mitosis
Original and copied chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell
What is the fourth stage of mitosis?
Cell divides
What are daughter cells?
The cells produced during mitosis
What is a chromatid?
A copy of a chromosome during cell division
What is cytokinesis?
The final part of the cell cycle, in which a cell splits into two
What is interphase?
Ten active life of a cell during which the cell prepares for mitosis
What is a stem cell?
An undifferentiated cell that can develop into one or more types of specialised cell
What does differentiate mean?
To specialise for a particular function
