What is a communicable disease?
A disease that can be transmitted from one organism to another
What are the coronary arteries?
Arteries that supply the heart muscle with OXYGENATED blood
What are some examples of an unhealthy lifestyle?
Lack of exercise, smoking, excessive drinking and a poor diet
What is atherosclerosis?
A medical condition resulting from an unhealthy lifestyle that reduces the flexibility of the arteries
What was a common treatment for coronary heart disease?
Heart Bypass
What is the more modern approach to coronary heart disease? And why is there a different approach?
Stents. They are less damaging
What is a heart bypass?
A procedure in which a section of the artery is removed to allow blood to flow around a blockage
What is a stent?
A mesh device which keeps the arteries open
What happens if a valve doesn’t function properly?
Less blood will be pumped around the body
What is a pacemaker used for?
To control heartbeats so that the maximum amount of blood is pumped at each beat
