Animal tissues, organs and organ systems 4 Flashcards
What products do the blood carry?
Glucose, amino acids, fatty acids and glycerol.
They also have oxygen and carbon dioxide
What is haemoglobin?
The protein in red blood cells that can temporarily bind with oxygen to carry it around the body
What does haemoglobin mind with?
Oxygen. It diffuses into your blood in the alveoli. This is called oxyhemoglobin
How are red blood cells adapted to carry oxygen?
Biconcave shape gives a high surface area to volume ratio.
Also having new nucleus means there is more room for haemoglobin
What do white blood cells do?
They are part of our immune system and fight off pathogens
Do white blood cells have a nucleus?
Yes
What is a phagocyte?
A types of white blood cell which engulfs pathogens
What is a lymphocyte?
A type of white blood cell that produces antibodies to help clump pathogens together to make them easier to destroy
What is a platelet?
Small structures in your blood that fuse together to form a scab
How do platelets begin the clotting process?
They release chemicals called clotting factors. They turn into a chemical called fibrinogen, which is found in the blood plasma? into fibrin. This forms a scab
