Animal tissues, organs and organ systems 1 Flashcards
What does insoluble mean?
Cannot dissolve
What does soluble mean?
Can dissolve
What is an enzyme
A biological molecule that speeds up a chemical reaction
What is a sphincter?
A ring of muscle that can open or close a tube
What is the purpose of the salivary gland?
They make saliva for when you are hungry or sense food
What is the purpose of saliva?
Acts as a lubricant, making it easier to swallow food.
What enzyme does saliva contain?
Amylase
What is the purpose of amylase?
It breaks down starch into glucose
What is the purpose of the oesophagus?
It moves food quickly and easily to the stomach. Saliva aids this
What is the purpose of the stomach?
Releases protease, which begins the breakdown of protein. It also releases an acid, to reduce the pH for the enzyme to work properly
What is the purpose of the Liver?
It produces bile, which helps to break down fats. Bile is then stored in the gallbladder. Food doesn’t pass through the liver
What is the purpose of the gall bladder?
It stores bile. Food does not pass through here
What is the purpose of the pancreas?
Produces carbohydrase, protease and lipase. The pancreas releases these into the small intestine. Food doesn’t pass through the pancreas
What is the purpose of the small intestine?
Absorbs the products of digestion into the blood. They are then transported around the body
What is the purpose of the large intestine?
Absorbs water and salts from the remaining digested food
