Cell Cycle and Mitosis Flashcards
unit 2
What is cyclin?
the protine that regulates the cell cycle
What is cancer?
A disorder of the cell cycle where your cells grow and divide out of control.
What are tumors?
Clumps (or mass) of cells.
What are the types of tumors?
Benign- doesn’t spread
malignant- spreads and is deadly.
What can cause cancer?
- Carcinogens: smoking,
tabaco, radiation - Viral infection
- Genetics
- Poor lifestyle
3 cancer treatments?
Surgery, chemotherapy, and spot ratiation
What is apotosis?
Programed cell death (cell self-destruction)
- Shapes tissues and organs
- When this doesn’t occur, diseases happen
(EX. AIDS and parkinson’s disease)
What is DNA overload?
When a cell grows too much and becomes too big for the DNA to control anymore.
2 reasons cells divide?
- To replace damaged, worn out cells
- DNA overload
Two main stages of cell division?
Mitosis and cytokinesis
What is the order of mitosis?
PMAT
Prophase?
nuclear envelope breaks down, chromatin condenses into chromosomes.
Metaphase?
Nucleus dissolves, chromosomes condense
Anaphase?
sister chromatids are pulled to opposite ends of the cell
Telophase?
2 membranes are formed around 2 identical sister nuclei
