Cell Cycle Flashcards
What’s the cell cycle?
As cells grow and divide, they cycle through
specific events in a regular pattern; this is
referred to as the cell cycle.
Interphase
The cell grows and replicates its DNA and centrioles.
G1 phase
It is the first part of the interphase period, where cells do most of the growing. They increase in size, and synthesize new proteins and organelles.
S phase
(synthesis) involves some growth,
and the replication of the DNA molecule. Single-stranded chromosomes duplicate and become double-stranded.
G2 phase
Shortest phase in the cycle. It manufactures many organelles and molecules needed for cell division.
M phase
The (cell division) phase of the cell cycle occurs after the G2 phase. It occurs quickly and involves mitosis and cytokinesis.
