Cell Flashcards
Cell
smallest unit that can carry all the processes of life
Organelle
cell component that performs specific functions for the cell
function of cell membrane
separate the cell organelles and cytoplasm from outside
Semi-permeable – allows some molecules freely in and out and others to enter with the assistance of an intrinsic protein
give support to the cell
Nucleus
Large organelle near the centre of the cell
contains the cell’s genetic information(DNA)
Controls the activities of the cell
Mitochondria
supplies energy to the cell in a process known as respiration
inner membrane of mitochondria produce the energy
Ribosome
makes protein mad up of RNA (Protein synthesis)
Cytoplasm
clear jelly like substance that fills the cell
contains the organelles
medium for metabolism
gives shape (Hydroskeleton)
Plant cells also contain
cell wall
chloroplast (Photosynthesis)
Large vacuoles
Cell Wall
rigid and gives plant cells a very defined shape
composed of cellulose fibre, polysaccharide and protein
It supports and strengthens the cell
Vacuoles
membrane-bound sacs within the cytoplasm
provide structural support, as well as serving a function of storage, waste disposal and protection
Eukaryotic
Organism whose cells contain a nucleus and and other membrane bound organelles ie. Plant cell
Prokaryotic
Organism whose cells do not contain a nucleus or have membrane-bound organelles ie. bacteria
