Bacteria Flashcards
Types of bacteria
Spherical (coccus)
Spiral (spirillum)
Rod (Bacillus)
Structure of bacteria
All have cell wall, cell membrane, nucleoid, ribosome, cytoplasms plasm
Some have Capsule and a tail called a flagella, and a plasmid
Binary fission
Dna replication and plasmid replication, moving the replicated structure to either the end of the cell, cell wall and cell membrane pinching inward, and finally cell division
Endospore
thick and tough walled cell formed in unsuitable conditions
Formed under harsh conditions so the cell could survive
Endospore formation
Nutrients run out Asymmetrical binary fission occurs smaller cell engulfed by larger cell engulfed cell forms a tough wall tough, walled cell is released to become an endospore
Nutrition
Autotrophic - Bacteria produce own food
Chemosynthesis
Photosynthesis
Heterotrophic - Bacteria obtain food from other living organisms
Saprophytic
Parasitic
factors affecting growth of bacteria
Ph
Temperature
Oxygen concentration
Growth curve of microorganisms
Lag phase - Bacteria adjusting to conditions
Log phase - Bacteria multiply
Stationary phase - Nutrients begin to run out, rate of bacteria growth = rate of bacteria death
Decline phase - Rate of death higher due to lack of nutrients
Survival phase - only some bacteria survive as endospores
