kekule structure
skeletal formula showing 3 double bonds on benzene
problems with kekules benzene structure
. benzene doesn’t readily undergo electrophilic reactions (it doesn’t discolourise bromine water) but the structure assumes it does as it is unsaturated.
. x ray diffraction shows that the bond lengths are equal but the structure shows us 3 double bonds and 3 single bonds
with benzene, instead of forming 3 double bonds what does it do?
the remaining electrons contribute to the delocalised rings above and below the plane of the molecule.
bond angles in benzene
120 degrees
what do azo compounds contain
R-N=N-R’
what makes a more stable azo compound and why
when the R and R’ are arene groups instead of akyl groups. this is because there would be an extended system of delocalised electrons
