What are automatic negative thoughts?
Negative over- generalizations that distort reality and are believed to be true.
Occur spontaneously and may barely enter awareness.
How many sessions are typical in CBT?
Usually 8-12 sessions, sometimes up to 20
What is the simple cognitive model for CBT?
- There is a situation
- Automatic thoughts (usually negative)
- A type of reaction (emotional, physiological, behavioral)
- External events
- Stream of thoughts
- Emotions
- Behaviors
- Sensations
Are all examples of what in terms of CBT?
Triggering Events!
What do you do, once you figure out what the automatic negative thought is?
Evaluate it!
- Look at validity
- Look for other interpretations
- Looks at worst case scenario
- Recognize impact
- Take a different perspective
- Problem solve!
What is the offensive strategy for getting rid of negative thoughts?
Dispute, Refute, Argue, attack!!
What homework is associated with CBT? How does it help?
DYSFUNCTIONAL THOUGHT RECORD
- Write down situations, automatic thoughts, emotions
- Think of an alternative response
- Outcome of the situation
What is a core belief?
Core beliefs about yourself, your world, and others, that develop from early experiences
Can contribute to the “symptom” of having automatic negative thoughts
Should ever tell a patient that their fears are silly? And will probably never happen?
No!!! Have THEM generate the evidence of the unlikelyhood of their fears coming true
