Primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory and related circuitry
What are the addiction ABC’s?
A- inability to consistently ABSTAIN
B- Impairment in BEHAVIORAL control
C- CRAVING
D- DIMINISHED recognition of significant problems
E- dysfunctional EMOTIONAL response
what is developing around age 15 when people start experimenting with drugs and alcohol?
Prefrontal cortex
What does the prefrontal cortex do?
- Stop and go button!
- Enables to assess situations
- Make sound decisions
- Keep our motions and desires under control
Substance use voluntary or involuntary?
Initial decision to use is mostly voluntary
When substance abuse takes over, the ability to exert self control can become seriously impaired
What is conditioning?
Environmental cues become associated with the use experience and can trigger uncontrollable cravings
What NT is responsible for regulation of movement emotion, cognition, motivation and FEELING OF PLEASURE?
Dopamine

2-10 more times
What are some risk factors for addiction?
- Genetics
- Earlier age onset
- Childhood trauma
- Mental Illness
*No single factor determines whether a person becomes addicted
Is addiction treatable?
YES!

What is a common goal of all public policies and programs?
Harm reduction
Sickness, death, etc
Does relapse mean failure?
NO!
Define Recovery?
A process of change through which individuals improve their health wellness, live self-directed lives
