CB2a Flashcards
what are organisms made of many cells called
multicellular organisims
what happens in mitosis
the diploid cell’s chromosomes are doubled to make 4 sets the copies separate and each cell now has 2 sets of chromosomes
what is the result of mitosis
two daughter cells which are identical
what is asexual reproduction
organisms that reproduce using just one parent
the offspring are clones
name the processes of mitosis in order
prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis
what happens in prophase
the nucleus starts to break down and spindle fibres appear
what happens in metaphase
by the end of metaphase the chromosomes are lined up on the spindle fibres across the middle of the cell
what happens in anaphase
the chromosome copies are separated and moved to either end of the cell on the spindle fibres
what happens in telophase
a membrane forms around each set of chromosomes to form nuclei
what happens in cytokinesis
a cell surface membrane forms to separate the two cells during cytokinesis. cell walls form in plant cells
describe the growth of cancer tumors
sometimes normal cells can change into cancer cells, by going into uncontrollable cell division. this rapid division makes growing lumps of cells called tumors
what are daughter cells
two identical cells
